Schlumberger Oilfield Services provides virtually every type of service to the upstream exploration and production industry.
In 2001, they were building a new XML-based content management system and needed to convert existing hard-copy training materials in to a series of high-performance interactive applications. With this new system, field engineers could train from around the world—when they weren’t knee-deep in logging equipment. And tests were standardized digitally.
Schlumberger entrusted Bravo Zulu with online training. Oilfield services are dangerous—and one mistake can cost lives. Our role was to determine training points, how important each training point was, and what level of interactivity was required for each point. Then we had to determine the specifics of how the concept should be visualized. We also helped build the course test, working with their use of the testing program QuestionMark®.
We have a broad, deep knowledge of multimedia that's rare even among industry experts, so implementing the project was no problem. Bravo Zulu provided the actual multimedia graphics for the course modules; an engaging graphics of a drill bit performing a certain kind of work, for example. We worked closely with Schlumberger’s training and IT departments, subject matter experts, and an instructional designer to ensure that the modules were of the highest quality.
During the project, we also became intimate with several of the systems they use in-house such as their EDMS application, Sigmalink, and Epic—as well as their DTDs (A set of rules for marking up a document in SGML) for training module construction.
In fact, we were the first interactive company deploying to Schlumberger's proprietary XML-based online training system. We've delivered nearly 100 training modules for them and five full training courses!
