Weatherford is a leader in the field of upstream petroleum services, with annual revenues exceeding $1.8B. They came to us with a big problem; their website just wasn’t performing the way it should.
We spent a lot of time on the project up front. First, we facilitated meetings to get a feel for their needs—surfacing goals and issues. Next users were defined, design requirements documented, navigation options evaluated, and content management options explored.
Then, information architecture, organization, and labeling were confronted. We also documented the site’s functionality in detail.
All of this before writing a single line of code. Why? Because like a golf swing, a small oversight in how a project is set up can mean a big difference in where you wind up. Experience and expertise has shown terrific savings through our front-end approach, avoiding problems—and waste—later in the project.
Comprehensive designs were built, a final design was chosen, and production began.
The new look and feel stepped away from the traditional theme of hardhats and wrenches. The navigation was simplified, and download time reduced. And a careful balance of the Weatherford brand with those of its business units was realized.
To improve the site’s management, they selected a content management system called Xpedio (now Stellent). We helped them evaluate the tool and quickly ramp-up on its use. Because of our experience both using and designing content management solutions, we were able to provide all the support they needed to manage their content effectively.
The end product was terrific. Immediately after launch, the marketing, communications, and IT teams started getting positive feedback. When the project was done, Weatherford’s senior management gave the Web team a big high-five!
